Coal-tip Safety Community of Interest

The Coal-tip Safety community of interest will be meeting online on Monday 06/01/25 from 10:00 – 11:30. Please contact info@epwales.org.uk if you would like to join.

The Coal Tip Safety Community of Research Group was first established in 2021 in order to provide the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales with expert advice on coal-tip safety. Topics discussed by the group include:

  • Coal-tips and climate change
  • Land use of tips and surrounding land
  • Water management and drainage systems
  • Legislative / Regulatory issues 
  • Economics / Social / Community issues
  • Remediation issues and removal of material
  • Circular economy opportunities
  • Biodiversity and control of invasives
  • Mine-water research

Coal Tip Safety Knowledge Share Workshop

On 18th July 2024, over twenty researchers, from seven universities attended an EPW led workshop in Cardiff University. The workshop discussed the Welsh Government’s proposals for a new Mines and Quarries bill, due to be introduced in the autumn, as well as receiving updates from researchers on their latest projects.
