Plastic in the Environment Research Community of Interest

The Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty  (SciCoa) is a network of independent scientific and technical experts. Since the coalition was formed in 2022, they have provided scientific information to decision makers and the public involved in the negotiations towards the United Nations Global Plastics Treaty. The final negotiation meeting takes place in a few weeks. Ahead of this, the SciCoa have produced a declaration, calling for ambitious and summarising essential aspects of this.

The declaration is online here: https://ikhapp.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scientists_Declaration_INC_5.pdf

Please consider adding your name to the list of signatories before Nov 22nd  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdS_YGLjHkwTet1GsNCG-px6KiLp_MrhSRDq_s1SnK_xUcqLQ/viewform

This will be presented at the final negotiating meeting, with strength coming from the number of supporting signatories. Please note: you do not need to be a member of the SciCoa to sign (but please do consider joining if interested)

At the request of Welsh Government, we are currently seeking expressions of interest from researchers interested in participating in this group. If you are undertaking research in this area and would like to attend please email info@epwales.orguk providing a brief description of your research in your particular area(s) of interest.

The Plastic in the Environment Research Community of Interest will be meeting in person from 17/12/2024 – 18/12/2024 at Cardiff University tbc,

We are in the process of organizing a workshop to enable you to share your work with both Welsh Government and your fellow researchers. This will provide an opportunity for you to feed into and guide Government policy, identify evidence gaps and develop new collaborations and which may lead to new research ideas.

We are proposing to run the event over two days in the period between 9th to 20th December (〰18/12/2024) in Cardiff, but we would aim to hold subsequent events across Wales and/or on-line.
