It’s been a rollercoaster in terms of environmental news and developments over the last few weeks. In addition to building our small but fabulous team here at EPWales, we’ve had one eye on the news, too.
In April, Welsh Government announced a climate change emergency, with Environment Minster Lesley Griffiths stating she hoped it would trigger a ‘wave of action’. A month later, First Minster Mark Drakeford scrapped plans for the M4 relief road in Newport, a move generally welcomed by Wales’ environmental organisations, bodies and campaigners.
With young activists like Greta Thunberg taking a stand and mobilising others across the globe, it seems as though public mood is starting to shift. Are we finally waking up to our future challenges?
It’s a question which we’ll be exploring at a special event to mark our official launch, on 26 June.
Join us at our FREE public event ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place’, with ‘Geology rock star’ Prof Iain Stewart: UNESCO Chair in Geoscience, Dir. of the Sustainable Earth Institute at Plymouth University and regular BBC presenter.
He’ll discuss how environmental scientists and change-makers can influence behaviour change and get the public to take action in an era of fake news, apathy and political upheaval.
Are we fighting a losing battle…or is change afoot?
Between a Rock and a Hard Place – Free public event with Prof Iain Stewart
Are you personally committed to doing something about climate change? Do you want to better engage people to take positive steps to address climate change?
As part of our official launch supported by the National Muesum Wales, we’d love to welcome you for this unique chance to hear from global speaker, broadcaster and change-maker Prof Iain Stewart – for one night only!
Speaking of his upcoming event, Prof Iain Stewart commented:
“Having worked with the National Museum in Cardiff on previous projects and I’m looking forward to coming back and sharing fresh insights into communicating the science around the environmental challenges we all face. Whether you’re a researcher, scientist, lobbyist or a concerned parent, we all have something to say, but it’s in all our collective interests to communicate more effectively with one another, so we can make sure we promote meaningful discussion around the climate emergency.
“I’m delighted to have been invited to speak by EP Wales, which is a young but ambitious project linking cutting edge ideas with influencers and policy makers both inside and outside of Wales. I look forward to meeting everyone in person on the 26th”
