In this talk, Ed will share his a review and some models of atmospheric nitrogen pollution and its effects on peatlands.
About the Speaker
Ed has 29 years’ experience in soil and plant ecology research, including empirical work on nutrient cycling, and model design, development and application. His focus is on predicting soil and ecosystem responses to anthropogenic drivers, in terms of soil organic matter dynamics, plant productivity, and plant species composition. He has designed and implemented several dynamic models of plant production, soil carbon, dissolved organic carbon, and nutrient cycling within natural and agricultural systems.
Ed has a particular interest in ecosystem responses to atmospheric nitrogen pollution. He heads the UK National Focal Centre for Modelling and Mapping of Exceedances of Critical Loads and Critical Levels, which generates statistics on air pollution impacts for use by the UK and DA governments. Ed also works on how to monitor of ecosystems for pollution impacts and recovery, and has designed monitoring networks for the Environmental Protection Agency (Ireland), the UK’s Environment Agency, and Natural England.
