PhD Opportunity – Quantifying road-derived microplastics in the environment: Sources, sinks, and water quality impacts

Host: Bangor University | RED-ALERT CDT | Start: Sept 2026

🌊 Project Focus: Track how microplastics from roads (tyres, road surfaces, runoff) move through the environment, impact rivers, and interact with co-contaminants. Uses multi-scale approaches and state-of-the-art analytical techniques to track contaminants from source to sink and develop practical solutions.  ollaboration with Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Government, and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

🔬 What You’ll Do:

  • Field sampling in urban & rural catchments
  • Lab analysis of microplastics & associated pollutants
  • Mesocosm experiments to test ecological impacts
  • Assess mitigation infrastructure like SuDS & wetlands

💡 Impact: Inform freshwater management, mitigation strategies, and UK-wide environmental policy.

👤 Who Should Apply: Environmental scientists, chemists, hydrologists, ecotoxicologists, soil scientists, or engineers interested in hands-on research with real-world impact.
