Toxic concentrations of veterinary insecticides have been detected in rivers across England—but how do they get there, how do they affect aquatic life, and what is the situation in Wales? This talk explores the occurrence, sources, and ecological impacts of compounds used in pet flea treatments and sheep dip. Using data from nine Welsh rivers spanning urban and rural systems, it highlights the importance of “down-the-drain” pathways and identifies sewer misconnections as a previously overlooked source of contamination, with observable biological consequences.
About the Speakers
Molly Hadley is a PhD researcher of freshwater ecology at Cardiff University specialising in water quality, emerging contaminants and limnology. She has been studying freshwater ecosystems for 4 years and is currently writing her thesis on lake oxygen dynamics. She also developed an interest in pharmaceutical and insecticidal pollution in aquatic systems during her master’s degree.
