In this talk, Saman will introduce his research on integrating multispecies justice into urban green space planning, using Cardiff as a case study. While urban green spaces are widely recognised for improving human well-being and urban liveability, they are often planned from a predominantly human-centred perspective. This overlooks the needs and value of non-human species, potentially undermining biodiversity and ecological integrity. Saman’s work seeks to address this gap by exploring how urban planning can account for the well-being of both humans and non-human species.
About the Speaker
Saman is a PhD candidate in Economics at Aberystwyth University. His research explores how multispecies justice can be meaningfully embedded in urban green space planning and governance, with a particular focus on fostering more equitable and sustainable relationships between humans and other species. He is an active member of the CRiSiS research team and work as a research assistant on the MUST (Enabling Multispecies Transitions) project. This international collaboration brings together partners from Finland, Wales, and Indonesia to investigate how societies can transition toward systems that support the mutual well-being of humans and non-human species, while reducing inequality and harm across communities and ecosystems. Prior to joining Aberystwyth University, Saman completed a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Design and worked as an urban designer across several consultancy firms.
