How athletes envisage the future of sport during climate change | Dr. Briony Latter | Cardiff University
Dr Briony Latter will present an overview of her current work developing a ‘how-to’ guide and accompanying case studies for workshops exploring how people envisage the future in the context of climate change. This includes how athletes envisage the future of their sports. The project aims to help users improve engagement with climate change and have meaningful and challenging conversations about how the future is going to change (and how they want it to change).
About the Speaker
Dr Briony Latter is based at the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) at Cardiff University. Originally from a creative and communications background, she is now a social sciences researcher focusing on society and climate change. Her work explores public engagement and communication, culture and sport, and social transformations across different sectors and scales.
Using sport as a means of climate communication | Grace James | Swansea University
Football is one of the most popular sports on earth, with an unparalleled reach across the global population, yet it’s rarely used as a vehicle for climate communication. Grace James will share her research on football’s potential as a climate messenger, drawing on a questionnaire sent to fans on whether they would take climate messaging from their team seriously. Grace’s research identifies opportunities to reach new audiences and spread awareness to boost climate resilience.
About the Speaker
Grace James is an MRes student at Swansea University, where she studies environmental dynamics and is currently working on her thesis. Having worked with Climate Vision Cornwall on the impact of trusted messengers, and reflected on the influence football teams had over their community, Grace makes the case that football could be a powerful voice for climate action, and to talk about what that could look like.
